Let’s talk about the glow.
You know the one, the soft, blue light reflecting off your child’s face as they sit on the sofa, thumb rhythmically flicking upward, eyes glazed over in a state of digital hypnosis.
As a parent, you’ve likely felt that pang of worry.
Is their brain turning to mush? Are they losing their ability to focus on the real world? Is technology a thief stealing their childhood?
In today’s digital world, it is easy to view tech as the enemy. We see the "zombie scroll" and we want to pull the plug entirely.
But what if I told you that the device in your child’s hand isn’t the problem, it’s the direction of their energy?
Technology is not a monolith; it is a tool. And like any tool, it can be used to either mindlessly consume or to masterfully create.
Our goal at Empower Kidz and Teenz Academy isn’t to raise kids who are afraid of screens.
It’s to raise innovators who use screens to build, solve, and lead.
We have to understand what we are up against.
Social media apps and video platforms are designed by some of the smartest engineers in the world to keep us watching.
They use "infinite scrolling", a feature that ensures content never ends, to trigger dopamine-driven loops in the brain.
It’s a cycle of trigger, action, and reward.
The brain gets a tiny hit of pleasure every time a new, funny video pops up. Over time, the brain learns that scrolling equals pleasure, even if the content itself has no value.
This is passive consumption.
It requires zero effort, zero imagination, and zero critical thinking. It is the digital equivalent of eating "empty calories" for hours on end.
When our kids spend all their time in this state, they aren't just "relaxing", they are training their brains to have a shorter attention span and a higher threshold for boredom.
But there is a better way.

The heartbeat of digital literacy is understanding that we are called to be more than just spectators.
We want to move our children from the passenger seat of technology into the driver’s seat.
Think about it this way: passive tech use is watching a three-minute video of someone else building a Lego castle. Active innovation is using a digital design program to blueprint a castle of your own.
One leaves you entertained; the other leaves you empowered.
When kids shift into "creator mode," the brain chemistry changes.
Instead of hunting for a cheap dopamine hit from an algorithm, they experience the deep satisfaction of a "living reward", the pride of completing a project, solving a coding bug, or editing a video that tells a story.
This is where life skills and technology intersect.
We are teaching them that their ideas have value and that the digital world is a playground for their imagination, not just a mall for their attention.
As parents who value intentional parenting, we view technology through the lens of stewardship.
In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), we see that we are responsible for what we do with the "gifts" we’ve been given.
Time is a gift. Intelligence is a gift. Access to the sum total of human knowledge through a smartphone is a gift.
If our children spend five hours a day consuming, are they being good stewards of those gifts?
Probably not.
But if they spend an hour learning a new language, thirty minutes practicing digital art, or ten minutes researching how to start a small business, they are investing their "talents."
We want to help them realize that their digital footprint is a reflection of their character.
Are they using their voice to encourage others, or just to scroll past them? Are they building something that brings light to the world, or are they getting lost in the shadows of the "scroll"?

Moving from scrolling to creating doesn't happen overnight, it requires a strategy.
1. Create "Creator Zones"
Designate specific times or areas in the house where tech is used strictly for production.
Maybe Saturday mornings are for "Project Time" where the iPad is only for drawing, music production, or coding apps.
By setting these boundaries, you help them mentally separate "fun scrolling" from "focused creating."
2. Follow the 1:1 Rule
For every hour of passive consumption (watching YouTube, scrolling TikTok), encourage an hour of active creation or physical activity.
It creates a balance that keeps their brain from staying in a "low-effort" loop for too long.
3. Provide the Right Tools
Sometimes kids scroll because they don't know what else to do.
Introduce them to platforms that encourage innovation. Instead of just games, look into:
4. Be the Lead Innovator
Let them see you creating.
If they see you only using your phone to check emails or scroll news, they will follow suit.
Let them see you taking a photo and editing it, writing a blog post, or researching a new skill. Show them that the phone is your "digital Swiss Army knife," not your "digital pacifier."

We often rush to fix our children’s boredom by handing them a screen.
But boredom is actually the birth canal of creativity.
When a child is bored and has a device that is restricted to "creator mode," they are forced to innovate.
They start to wonder, "How does this app work?" or "Could I make a video like that?"
That curiosity is the spark of leadership.
At Empower Kidz and Teenz Academy, we believe that every child has a unique purpose. Our job is to give them the tools to fulfill it.
In our Complete life skills platform, we dive deep into the mindset shifts required to navigate the 21st century with confidence and faith.
It isn’t about hiding from the world; it’s about being prepared to change it.
The transition from passive scrolling to active innovation is one of the most important transitions a child can make in the modern age.
It is the difference between being a "user" and being a "builder."
As parents, we are the architects of their environment. We set the tone for how technology is viewed and used in our homes.
If you are looking for a community and a curriculum that supports this journey, we would love to have you join us.
